  7. Questions we get asked

“Can I get Kamagra in the US?” arrives in our inbox most weeks, usually phrased as though there is a clever answer.

There is not. The honest position is straightforward, and we would rather set it out properly than leave people guessing, because the guessing is where the bad decisions happen.

Medical and legal note. Sildenafil is a prescription-only medicine in the United States. Kamagra is not an FDA-approved product. This guide explains the rules as they stand; it is not legal advice, and it is not a recommendation to import anything.

The legal position, stated plainly

Three facts, and they stack:

  1. Sildenafil is prescription-only in the US. Buying it without a prescription is outside the rules, whatever the seller’s website says.
  2. Kamagra is not FDA-approved. Ajanta Pharma makes it legally for the Indian market. The FDA has never reviewed it, so in US law it is an unapproved new drug.
  3. Importing an unapproved drug is prohibited under the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. That applies to a single parcel to your house just as it applies to a shipping container.

So there is no reading of US law under which ordering Kamagra from overseas is permitted. Anyone who tells you otherwise is guessing, or selling.

What the FDA’s personal import policy actually says

This is where most of the confusion comes from, so it is worth getting right.

The FDA publishes what it calls enforcement discretion for personal imports. In narrow circumstances — typically a serious condition, no comparable approved treatment available in the US, a supply of about three months or less, and no unreasonable risk — it may choose not to act against a personal shipment.

Two things people miss. First, discretion is not permission: it describes what the agency may decline to pursue, not a right you can rely on. Second, erectile dysfunction fails the central test anyway, because approved treatments are widely available in the US. Generic sildenafil has been sold there since 2017.

In other words, the policy that people cite as their cover does not cover this.

What happens at customs

Customs and Border Protection screens international mail, and prescription medicines are one of the categories it looks for. If a parcel is pulled, the usual outcomes are these:

  • The parcel is detained and you receive a written notice, usually from the FDA rather than CBP.
  • You are given a chance to respond, with a deadline. Most people do not, because they have nothing to argue.
  • The medicine is destroyed and you lose what you paid. There is no compensation and no refund from the government.

Prosecution of an individual over a small personal quantity is rare; seizure is not rare at all. Treat the money as at risk rather than the parcel as likely.

We ship with tracking, and we say plainly in our guide to what happens after you order that customs can stop a parcel and that no seller anywhere can promise otherwise. Any site that guarantees delivery through customs is lying to you.

The bigger risk is not customs

Losing a parcel is an annoyance. Taking the wrong tablet is a different matter.

The National Association of Boards of Pharmacy reviews online pharmacies and has consistently found that the overwhelming majority are not in compliance with US pharmacy laws, and it maintains a public “not recommended” list running to tens of thousands of sites. Regulators who test seized products routinely find tablets that are under-dosed, over-dosed, or contain a different drug altogether.

That is the genuine hazard with ED medicines bought online, and it is far more common than a legal problem. Sildenafil interacts dangerously with nitrates, so a tablet containing more than the label claims is not a trivial thing.

If you are in the United States, this is the option we would point a family member to first.

Generic sildenafil is approved and cheap there now. A telehealth service such as Hims, Ro or Lemonaid, or simply your own doctor, can issue a prescription after a short consultation, and a US pharmacy dispenses an FDA-approved generic. Costs have fallen a long way since the patent expired, and discount programmes bring them down further.

You get a product whose contents are guaranteed, a pharmacist to ask, and nothing at customs. For most people in the US, that is simply the better deal, and we would rather say so than pretend otherwise.

If you order anyway, check these

People make their own decisions, and plenty do. If that is you, the checks that matter are the same ones we apply to every pack that passes through here:

  • Ajanta Pharma printed into the foil, repeated along the strip, not a label on the box
  • Batch number and expiry on the strip itself
  • Blisters intact and sealed, never loose tablets
  • Carton and strip agreeing on brand and strength
  • A seller who answers questions before you pay, and who does not promise guaranteed customs clearance

And the medical rules do not change with the postcode. No nitrates, ever. One dose in 24 hours. A doctor first if you have heart disease, low blood pressure, or take alpha-blockers. Our guide on what Kamagra actually is covers the dosing and side effects in full.

Questions we get asked

Is Kamagra sold in US pharmacies? No. It has no FDA approval, so no licensed US pharmacy can stock it. US pharmacies dispense approved generic sildenafil instead, which is the same active ingredient.

Will I get in trouble for ordering it? Prosecution of an individual for a small personal quantity is rare. Seizure and destruction of the parcel is the common outcome, and you carry that loss.

Is generic sildenafil in the US expensive? Not any more. It came off patent in 2017 and is one of the cheaper generics available there, particularly with a pharmacy discount card.

Disclaimer. Sildenafil is a prescription-only medicine. This guide is general information from the MediAxiss pharmacy team about the rules as they stand. It is not legal advice and it does not replace a doctor who knows your medical history.
