Sildenafil has a nickname. Tadalafil has a weekend. Vardenafil has — nothing, really. It’s the third PDE5 inhibitor, it’s been licensed since 2003, and for every fifty Cenforce or Vidalista orders we pack, we might pack one Vilitra. Which is odd, because when someone does switch to it, they tend to stay.
This is the guide for the man who’s tried sildenafil and found the flushing or the blue-tint vision annoying, or who wants a short-acting tablet but a little more reliably than sildenafil gives him. Two products on our shelf: Vilitra 20 from Centurion and Zhewitra 20 from Sunrise. Same molecule, same strength, same price. Here’s what it does, who it’s for, and the one heart-rhythm caution you should read before you order.
The short answer
Vardenafil is sildenafil’s quieter cousin. It works in 25–60 minutes, lasts 4–6 hours, is a little less bothered by a meal, and — this is the reason most people switch — it’s much less likely to give you the blue-tinted vision that sildenafil is known for. It’s not longer-lasting like tadalafil, and it’s not faster like avanafil. It’s the sensible middle. Start at 10 mg (half a tablet), never go above 20 mg in 24 hours, and if you have a heart-rhythm condition or take drugs that prolong the QT interval, it’s the one PDE5 inhibitor your doctor may steer you away from.
What vardenafil is, and why nobody talks about it
Vardenafil is the generic name for the drug Bayer sold as Levitra (and later as the dissolving Staxyn). It blocks PDE5, the enzyme that breaks down the chemical (cGMP) that relaxes blood-vessel muscle in the penis. Block the enzyme, cGMP builds up, blood flows in. Same mechanism as sildenafil and tadalafil; no arousal, no effect.
Why the low profile? Three reasons, none of them about how well it works:
- → Viagra got there five years earlier and took the nickname.
- → Cialis took the “36 hours” story, which is a much easier thing to advertise than “slightly fewer visual side effects”.
- → Bayer withdrew branded Levitra from a lot of markets once the patents ran out, so there’s been no marketing budget behind the molecule for years.
Meanwhile the Indian generic makers kept producing it, because doctors kept prescribing it. Vardenafil is, milligram for milligram, the most potent of the three older PDE5 inhibitors at the enzyme — which is why the doses are 5, 10 and 20 mg rather than 25, 50 and 100. That doesn’t make it “stronger” in the way customers mean. It means a 20 mg tablet is the top of its own ladder, exactly as 100 mg sildenafil is the top of its.
Vardenafil vs sildenafil vs tadalafil
| Vardenafil (Vilitra, Zhewitra) | Sildenafil (Cenforce, Fildena) | Tadalafil (Vidalista, Tadarise) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Onset | 25–60 min | 30–60 min | 30 min–2 h |
| Useful window | About 4–6 hours | About 4–5 hours | Up to 36 hours |
| Half-life | ~4–5 hours | ~4 hours | ~17.5 hours |
| Food effect | Modest — a heavy fatty meal slows it a little | Marked — a fatty meal can delay it an hour or more | None worth mentioning |
| Blue-tint vision | Rare | Sildenafil’s signature | Rare |
| Back / muscle ache | Rare | Rare | Tadalafil’s signature |
| Heart-rhythm (QT) caution | Yes — mild QT prolongation on the label | Not a labelled concern at normal doses | Not a labelled concern |
| Starting / max dose | 10 mg / 20 mg | 50 mg / 100 mg | 10 mg / 20 mg |
| Daily low-dose option | No | No | Yes (2.5–5 mg) |
Read the food row and the vision row. Those two are where vardenafil earns its place. Everything else is a wash against sildenafil, and tadalafil beats both on duration. If you’ve never tried any of them, our written-out comparison of the two big sellers is at Vidalista 20 vs Cenforce 100; vardenafil sits between them, closer to the sildenafil end.
Who vardenafil actually suits
From the order notes and the emails, the men who end up on Vilitra or Zhewitra and reorder it are usually one of these:
- Sildenafil worked, but the side effects didn’t. Flushed face, blocked nose, that blue haze. Vardenafil is the same length of effect with a gentler profile for many men. This is the biggest group.
- They want short-acting, not 36 hours. Some men don’t like tadalafil’s hangover of backache the next day, or don’t want a drug in their system until Monday. Vardenafil is out by morning.
- Dinner keeps getting in the way. Sildenafil after a curry is unreliable. Vardenafil is less fussy — not immune, but less fussy.
- Sildenafil at 100 mg wasn’t quite enough. There’s some evidence that vardenafil works for a proportion of men who respond poorly to sildenafil, particularly those with diabetes. Not a promise. Worth a try before giving up on tablets — with a doctor’s nod.
Who it doesn’t suit: anyone with a known long-QT syndrome or taking class IA or III anti-arrhythmics (quinidine, procainamide, amiodarone, sotalol). For those men, sildenafil or tadalafil is the safer pick. More on that below.
Dosing: 10 mg to start, 20 mg is the ceiling
The label is clear, and we’d rather repeat it than have you learn it the hard way.
| Dose | Who it suits | How |
|---|---|---|
| 5 mg | Over 65, or taking drugs that slow vardenafil clearance (ketoconazole, itraconazole, ritonavir, erythromycin) | A quarter of a Vilitra 20 — fiddly; a doctor may prefer a lower-strength product |
| 10 mg | The official starting dose. Start here. | Half a Vilitra 20 or Zhewitra 20, cut along the score |
| 20 mg | When 10 mg gave a partial result without side effects | One tablet — the licensed maximum |
| Above 20 mg | Not a licensed dose. Adds side effects and QT risk, not effect | Don’t. If 20 mg isn’t working, that’s a doctor conversation |
Practical notes from the packing bench:
- → Take it 30–60 minutes before. The leaflet says 25–60. Give it the full hour the first few times, like sildenafil.
- → A light meal is fine. A big fatty one will slow it a bit — less than sildenafil, more than tadalafil.
- → One tablet in 24 hours. Never a second because the first “didn’t work”.
- → Grapefruit juice raises vardenafil levels. Skip it on the day.
- → Alcohol: a drink or two. More than that is its own cause of ED.
- → Three tries before you judge it. First-night nerves sink more first tablets than the drug ever does.
Side effects and the QT question
Vardenafil’s common side effects are the sildenafil set, generally a notch milder: headache, flushing, blocked or runny nose, indigestion, dizziness. Blue-tinted vision is uncommon. Back pain is uncommon. Most pass within a few hours because the drug does.
Now the part that’s specific to vardenafil. On an ECG, the QT interval measures how long the heart takes to reset between beats. Vardenafil prolongs it slightly — a small effect, and in a healthy heart it’s of no consequence at licensed doses. But it adds up with other things that lengthen QT, and the label says so plainly. Talk to a doctor before vardenafil, and probably choose sildenafil or tadalafil instead, if you:
- → Have a diagnosed congenital long-QT syndrome, or a family history of it
- → Take class IA anti-arrhythmics (quinidine, procainamide) or class III (amiodarone, sotalol)
- → Take other QT-prolonging medicines — some antipsychotics, some antibiotics (erythromycin, clarithromycin), some antidepressants, methadone
- → Have low potassium or magnesium, or significant kidney disease
The usual PDE5 cautions apply on top: a heart attack or stroke in the last six months, unstable angina, very low or uncontrolled high blood pressure, severe liver or kidney disease, a history of sudden vision loss (NAION), retinitis pigmentosa, sickle cell, or Peyronie’s disease. Alpha-blockers (tamsulosin, doxazosin) need spacing from the dose — a doctor’s call, and with vardenafil the label specifically wants you stable on the alpha-blocker first.
Vilitra 20 vs Zhewitra 20: two makers, one price
We stock two vardenafil 20 mg products, and the “which one?” question is the easiest we answer all week.
| Vilitra 20 | Zhewitra 20 | |
|---|---|---|
| Vardenafil | 20 mg | 20 mg |
| Manufacturer | Centurion Laboratories (also Cenforce, Vidalista) | Sunrise Remedies (also Tadarise, Avana) |
| Strip | 10 film-coated tablets | 10 film-coated tablets |
| Scored for halving | Yes | Yes |
| Price, 30 tablets | $105.99 | $105.99 |
| Price, 180 tablets | $185.99 | $185.99 |
Identical composition, identical prices at every pack size. What’s left is the maker. Centurion is the company behind Cenforce and Vidalista — if you already buy either of those, Vilitra keeps your drawer to one manufacturer’s blister style, which is genuinely handy when you’re telling strips apart. Sunrise makes Tadarise and Avana; same logic if that’s your shelf. Coating and fillers differ, which is the only reason one might sit better on your stomach than the other. Neither is “the good one”. We reorder both from the same importer and open both cartons the same way.

Same numbers for both, from our own shelves:
| Pack | Vilitra 20 / Zhewitra 20 | Per tablet | Per 10 mg starting dose (halved) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 30 tablets | $105.99 | $3.53 | $1.77 |

| 120 tablets | $153.99 | $1.28 | $0.64 |
| 180 tablets | $185.99 | $1.03 | $0.52 |
Those are a little below Cenforce 100 and well below Vidalista 20 at the matching sizes, so switching to vardenafil costs you nothing extra. Delivery is included on every pack. There’s no 300 or 360 pack for vardenafil — it’s a lower-volume product for the factories too — so 180 is the ceiling.
For a first order, the 30-pack halved gives 60 starting doses for $105.99. That’s more than enough to know whether vardenafil is your drug.
Questions we get asked
Is vardenafil better than sildenafil?
Not better — different. Both last about 4–6 hours and need 30–60 minutes of lead time. Vardenafil is less affected by food and much less likely to cause blue-tinted vision, and many men find its side effects milder. Sildenafil has a longer track record and no heart-rhythm (QT) caution. If sildenafil suits you, there’s no reason to switch.
How long does Vilitra 20 take to work?
Usually 25 to 60 minutes. Plan for the full hour the first few times, and keep dinner light — a heavy fatty meal slows it a little (less than it slows sildenafil). The effect lasts around 4 to 6 hours, and you still need to be aroused for it to do anything.
Can I cut Vilitra 20 or Zhewitra 20 in half?
Yes. Both are scored and split cleanly into two 10 mg doses, which is the official starting dose. A pill cutter makes the halves even. Starting at 10 mg is the cheapest way to try vardenafil and the way the label tells you to begin.
What is the QT warning about?
Vardenafil slightly lengthens the QT interval — the heart’s electrical reset time between beats. In a healthy heart at licensed doses it’s not a practical concern, but it stacks with other QT-prolonging medicines (some anti-arrhythmics, antipsychotics and antibiotics) and with congenital long-QT syndrome. If any of those apply, a doctor will usually suggest sildenafil or tadalafil instead.
Vilitra or Zhewitra — is there any difference?
Both contain vardenafil 20 mg in strips of 10 and cost the same at every pack size. Vilitra is made by Centurion Laboratories, Zhewitra by Sunrise Remedies. The coating and inactive ingredients differ, so if one disagrees with your stomach try the other. Otherwise pick whichever maker you already buy from.
Can I take vardenafil with tadalafil or sildenafil?
No. They’re all PDE5 inhibitors and combining them stacks the blood-pressure effect without adding benefit. Leave 24 hours after vardenafil or sildenafil before taking another; leave 48 hours after tadalafil, because it stays in the body far longer.
What to do now
If sildenafil worked but its side effects wore you down, or you want a short-acting tablet that doesn’t sulk when you’ve eaten, vardenafil is the obvious thing to try next — after a word with your doctor, and only if you’re not on QT-prolonging medicines. Open the Vilitra 20 page or the Zhewitra 20 page (same price, same drug; pick the maker you already use), order the 30-pack, halve the first tablet, and give it a full hour on a light stomach. If you’d rather have the 36-hour option instead, the tadalafil shelf is where to look. And if you’re not sure which of the three molecules is yours, email us — we’ll tell you which box we’d pack, any hour.
